Tesla says FSD v15 will deliver a major improvement in autonomous-driving capability, while external sales of its Optimus humanoid robot could begin in the second half of 2027. The company also maintains that its current AI4 hardware can support unsupervised driving, although several of these targets remain dependent on technology that has not yet been demonstrated at scale.

Tesla Describes FSD v15 as a Major Upgrade

During a recent meeting at Tesla’s Fremont facility, the company gave JPMorgan an updated view of its autonomous-driving development. According to the bank’s account, Tesla described FSD v15 as a substantial advance built around seven core technologies.

About 40% of those technologies are reportedly already being used by Tesla’s robotaxi fleet in Austin. Initial results have been characterized as encouraging, although detailed performance data for the complete v15 system has not been released.

The new version follows FSD v14, which arrived in October 2025 after a lengthy gap between major updates. Tesla has repeatedly presented newer FSD releases as important steps toward removing human supervision.

That final transition, however, remains unfinished. Consumer Tesla vehicles using FSD still require driver attention, making the performance of v15 important to the company’s broader autonomy plans.


Tesla Says AI4 Has Enough Computing Power

Tesla also told JPMorgan that AI4, previously known as HW4, is capable of supporting FSD v15 and eventual unsupervised operation.

At the same time, the company is introducing an updated AI4.5 computer. According to the information presented to JPMorgan, the newer hardware provides roughly 10% additional computing performance and about twice the memory.

The distinction matters because Tesla previously said its older HW3 platform would be capable of supporting its autonomous-driving ambitions. HW3 vehicles are now receiving a reduced FSD v14 version rather than the full software package available on newer hardware.

Tesla’s next-generation AI5 computer has also reportedly moved to a mid-2027 timetable. Meanwhile, the Cybercab is expected to begin with the current generation of Tesla computing hardware rather than waiting for AI5.

The company therefore continues to maintain that another major hardware generation is not required before unsupervised driving can begin.


Cybercab Production Is Ahead of Service Expansion

Tesla expects its purpose-built Cybercab to become increasingly important to its robotaxi strategy and has indicated that fleet growth could accelerate from late 2026 into early 2027.

The company is reportedly limiting additional Model Y robotaxi conversions because it expects Cybercab production to support future expansion. Tesla is also targeting an eventual operating cost of approximately $0.30 per mile.

Actual autonomous service remains considerably smaller than those long-term plans.

Tesla recently reported approximately 380,000 miles of unsupervised driving since beginning its robotaxi program. Its Austin operation continues with a relatively small number of vehicles, despite Cybercab production already moving forward.

For comparison, Waymo has reported more than 200 million fully autonomous miles, illustrating the difference in current operating scale between the two programs.


Optimus Could Reach Outside Buyers in 2027

Tesla also provided a new timetable for Optimus Gen 3. The company told JPMorgan that the robot’s design has been finalized and that most of its supply arrangements are already established.

Production equipment is planned for space previously used for Model S and Model X manufacturing in Fremont. Tesla says commercial sales to customers outside the company could begin as early as the second half of 2027.

Its manufacturing ambitions extend much further. Tesla has discussed eventual capacity of approximately 1 million Optimus units in Fremont and as many as 10 million in Texas.

Those figures remain long-term targets rather than current production levels. The Gen 3 robot has yet to receive its full public unveiling, and Tesla has not demonstrated large numbers of Optimus units performing sustained productive work in its factories.

The latest timetable therefore provides clearer targets, but execution remains the key question.
