Thursday and Friday departures will overlap with normal commuter traffic. Monday afternoon is expected to bring heavier return traffic. These national estimates can still be affected by weather, construction, crashes, and local events.
What the Forecast Means for EV Drivers
Traffic changes an EV trip in two ways: it can lengthen the drive, and it can move more vehicles toward the same charging stops at the same time. AAA and INRIX publish road-congestion forecasts, not a national forecast for charging-station wait times. A route with light traffic can still have a busy charger, while a delayed highway may spread arrivals across several locations.
Several corridors show why timing matters. INRIX projects Los Angeles to San Diego on I-5 to reach 5 hours 19 minutes at its Friday 6 p.m. peak, 75% above normal. Boston to Providence on I-95 South is forecast to rise 105% above normal at 3:30 p.m. Friday. Seattle to Ellensburg on I-90 East is forecast to rise 121% above normal at 7:15 p.m. Monday. These are route-specific estimates, not guarantees for every road or charging location.
Leaving early also gives an EV driver more room to react. A detour, a slower-than-expected section, or a full charging site is easier to manage when the battery is not already near its minimum comfortable state of charge.
Plan Charging Stops Before Leaving

PlugShare is useful for checking individual stations through connector filters, recent check-ins, driver reviews, photos, and PlugScore ratings.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fueling Station Locator provides another way to find public chargers along a route. Before leaving, compare the planned stops with the charging network’s own app for the latest operating status and availability.
Choose one primary charging location and one nearby backup. Confirm that both are compatible with the vehicle and open to the public. Shortly before departure, check the vehicle navigation system or charging-network app for station status and access requirements.
For an overnight stop, contact the hotel or rental property directly. A charger may appear on a booking page without confirming whether it works, is available to all guests, or can be reserved.
When a Portable Charger Can Help
A portable AC charger provides another option when the destination has a compatible outlet but no installed charging station.

If the planned highway becomes heavily delayed, update the charging stops along with the route. A detour may increase distance or move the vehicle away from the original charging network.
The most practical Labor Day EV plan combines a lower-traffic departure time, enough battery reserve for unexpected delays, and a second compatible place to charge.
