Cybertruck and Powerwall Can Now Work Together

Before this update, homeowners with a Tesla Powerwall could not use Cybertruck Powershare as an additional home backup source at the same time. The two systems could each supply backup electricity, but they were not designed to operate together as one coordinated setup.

That limitation reduced the usefulness of Powershare for households already using Tesla’s home energy products.

The latest change allows Powerwall 3 to continue managing home backup while the Cybertruck contributes additional stored energy. Instead of choosing between the stationary battery and the truck, eligible homeowners can now use both during an outage.

Tesla originally indicated that Powerwall compatibility would arrive in 2025. The feature is therefore reaching customers later than initially expected and nearly two years after the first Cybertruck deliveries began.

For owners who already have both products, however, the update creates a more complete connection between Tesla’s vehicle and residential energy systems.


Cybertruck Adds 123 kWh of Available Battery Capacity

The main advantage of connecting Cybertruck to Powerwall 3 is the large amount of energy stored in the truck.

Cybertruck has a battery capacity of approximately 123 kWh, while one Powerwall stores 13.5 kWh. Based on those figures, the truck contains roughly as much energy as nine individual Powerwall units.

That explains Tesla’s description of Cybertruck as providing energy capacity comparable to nine additional Powerwalls when connected to a compatible home backup system.

The actual duration of an outage backup will still depend on household electricity consumption. Heating, air conditioning, water heating and other high-power appliances can significantly change how quickly stored energy is used.

Tesla says the combined setup can provide more than three days of backup power, but that figure should be understood as an estimate rather than a fixed runtime for every household.

The larger benefit is flexibility: Powerwall can provide stationary storage for regular home energy management, while Cybertruck can supply a much larger reserve when it is connected and available.


Powershare Can Supply Up to 11.5 kW

Cybertruck Powershare is Tesla’s bidirectional energy system, allowing electricity stored in the vehicle battery to flow beyond the truck itself.

For home backup applications, Powershare can deliver up to 11.5 kW. That output is intended to support household loads during a power interruption, subject to the capacity and configuration of the home electrical system.

Using the Cybertruck for whole-home backup requires additional Tesla hardware. The system relies on a Universal Wall Connector and Powershare Gateway to manage the connection between the vehicle and the home.

The Gateway is particularly important during an outage because a backup system must isolate the home from the utility grid before supplying electricity locally.

The feature therefore requires more than simply plugging the Cybertruck into an ordinary home charger. Compatible equipment and installation are necessary before the vehicle can function as a home backup source.


Installation Cost Remains an Important Factor

The required hardware can add a significant cost for homeowners who want to use Powershare.

When Tesla initially introduced the system, an installation using the necessary equipment was estimated at around $4,000 in some cases. Actual pricing can vary considerably depending on the property and electrical work required.

Some early Cybertruck owners reported substantially higher estimates, including one installation quote exceeding $30,000.

Those examples show why compatibility with Powerwall 3 matters but does not automatically make Powershare practical for every Cybertruck owner.

Homes that already have suitable Tesla energy equipment may face a different installation process from properties requiring extensive electrical upgrades.
