Instead of maximizing range at any price, the Universal EV Platform is being developed around smaller and less expensive batteries. Previous technical information suggests the Fathom could use approximately 51 kWh of usable capacity, around 15% less than the battery fitted to the BYD Atto 3.

LFP chemistry generally costs less than nickel-rich alternatives and provides strong cycle life, making it particularly suitable for lower-priced EVs where controlling battery expenses is critical.

Ford is also expected to equip the truck with a native NACS charging port, providing access to compatible Tesla Supercharger locations.


New Production System Could Lower Manufacturing Costs

The Fathom will be assembled at Ford's Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky, which is receiving approximately $2 billion in upgrades.

Ford plans to manufacture its new EVs using an unconventional "assembly tree" method. Instead of moving a nearly complete body along one traditional production line, the vehicle is divided into several large sections that progress through separate production paths before being joined later in the process.

Large castings reduce the number of individual body components, while the simplified architecture is intended to lower assembly time and labor complexity.
