Three Electric AMG GT SUV Models Are Planned

Mercedes-AMG has introduced the GT SUV as a dedicated electric performance model, with U.S. sales expected to begin next summer.

The lineup will include three versions: GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63. All use the AMG.EA architecture, which also underpins the electric AMG GT four-door model.

Although the two vehicles share a technical foundation, the SUV receives different battery configurations, higher available charging power and suspension developments designed for its body style.

Every version includes variable all-wheel drive, with the ability to disconnect the front electric motors when they are not needed.

The GT 53 uses a two-speed transmission at the rear axle. The more powerful GT 55 and GT 63 instead employ three electric motors, allowing separate torque control at the rear wheels.

This arrangement gives AMG greater flexibility when distributing power through corners while maintaining traction under acceleration.

GT 63 Delivers Up to 1,153 Horsepower

The GT 63 is the most powerful model in the range, producing a claimed 1,153 hp and 1,475 lb-ft of torque.

Mercedes-AMG estimates acceleration from 0–60 mph in 2.6 seconds, with 124 mph reached in 7.2 seconds.

Its maximum speed is electronically limited to 168 mph.

The GT 55 uses a similar three-motor configuration but produces 805 hp and 1,372 lb-ft at peak output.

It is expected to reach 60 mph in 3.0 seconds and 124 mph in 9.9 seconds. Its standard top speed is 143 mph, with a 168-mph limit available as an option.

Both three-motor models use axial-flux motor technology and provide 711 hp of continuous output, according to Mercedes-AMG.

The GT 53 takes a less powerful approach with two synchronous electric motors.

It produces 536 peak hp and 590 lb-ft, with 362 hp available continuously.

Mercedes estimates a 4.1-second acceleration time to 60 mph and a maximum speed of 143 mph.

These performance figures are manufacturer estimates rather than independently measured results.

Charging Power Reaches 710 kW

Charging capability is a major technical distinction between the GT SUV variants.

The GT 55 and GT 63 use batteries with 128 kWh of usable capacity, compared with 106 kWh in the electric AMG GT four-door.

Both SUVs support a claimed maximum DC charging power of 710 kW.

Under suitable conditions, Mercedes says their batteries can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 12 minutes.

The company also estimates that the system can replenish 48 kWh in five minutes or 83 kWh in ten minutes.

At a 400-kW charging station, the estimated 10–80% charging time increases to 16 minutes.

The GT 53 uses a smaller battery and supports up to 600 kW of DC charging.

Mercedes claims an 11-minute charging session from 10% to 80%, increasing to 14 minutes at a 400-kW station.

All three versions support 11-kW AC charging and will feature NACS charging connectors in North America.

They can also switch to 400-volt operation for compatible DC charging infrastructure.

Actual charging performance will depend on battery conditions and the power available from the charging station.

Electric Range Targets Up to 435 Miles

Mercedes-AMG has announced preliminary driving range targets using the European WLTP testing procedure.

The GT 55 and GT 63 are expected to deliver between 385 and 435 miles, equivalent to approximately 620–700 kilometers.

The lighter GT 53 has a stated WLTP range of 371–415 miles.

These figures have not been confirmed through U.S. EPA testing, so American range estimates may differ.

The larger battery in the GT 55 and GT 63 provides additional energy capacity, although their more powerful drivetrains also place greater demands on the battery.

Final certified range figures will offer a clearer comparison between the three configurations.

New Suspension and Interior Technology

The GT SUV introduces an updated Active Ride Control+ suspension system, combining body-roll management with active control of pitching movements.

The technology is designed to reduce forward body movement during braking and rearward movement during acceleration.

It is standard on the GT 63 and optional on the GT 55. Carbon-ceramic brakes are also available on those models.

All versions include six-degree rear-wheel steering.

Inside, the SUV features a 14-inch central touchscreen, a 10.2-inch digital instrument display and an optional 14-inch passenger screen.

The panoramic glass roof can change between transparent and opaque settings, while illuminated AMG graphics provide an additional interior design feature.

Exterior styling includes a wide front grille, prominent wheel arches and a sloping roofline. The GT 55 and GT 63 also receive an active rear spoiler.

Mercedes-AMG has not yet announced U.S. pricing for the new electric SUV.
