General Motors is reportedly preparing a new generation of the Chevrolet Equinox EV for around 2028, with production expected to begin in late 2028 or early 2029. While GM has not confirmed the program, multiple industry reports suggest the next model will introduce a new EV platform and upgraded vehicle electronics.

A Successor Is Reportedly Already in Development
Although the Chevrolet Equinox EV has only been on sale since 2024, it is already one of General Motors' most successful electric vehicles.
The model has surpassed 100,000 U.S. sales through June, establishing itself as a key player in Chevrolet's expanding EV lineup. Its combination of competitive pricing, practical range, and crossover design has made it one of the company's strongest performers in the mainstream electric vehicle segment.
According to reports citing sources familiar with GM's future product plans, the automaker has begun work on a next-generation Equinox EV. Current estimates place production sometime between late 2028 and early 2029, though the company has not officially announced the project or its launch schedule.
A New EV Platform Could Replace BEV3
One of the biggest reported changes involves the vehicle's underlying architecture.
The current Equinox EV is built on GM's BEV3 platform, which also supports several other electric models, including the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Cadillac Lyriq, Cadillac Optiq, Cadillac Vistiq, Cadillac Celestiq, and even the Honda Prologue.
Industry sources indicate the next Equinox EV may migrate to an entirely new platform known as BEV-N. Although General Motors has not publicly detailed the architecture, the reported transition suggests the company is preparing a broader evolution of its electric vehicle technology rather than relying solely on incremental improvements.
Another industry publication has independently reported that the Equinox EV is expected to receive a significant update around 2028, lending additional credibility to the reported timeline, even though it has not confirmed whether the vehicle will undergo a complete redesign.
GM Is Preparing a Broader Technology Upgrade
The reported platform change coincides with a larger transformation taking place across General Motors' future vehicle portfolio.
GM has already confirmed that it is developing a next-generation electrical and software architecture scheduled to arrive around 2028. The new system is expected to introduce centralized computing, replacing many distributed electronic control units with a smaller number of more powerful computers capable of managing multiple vehicle functions.
This approach follows an industry trend toward software-defined vehicles, where computing performance plays a larger role in vehicle capabilities, feature updates, and system integration.
While General Motors has not directly linked these developments to the next Equinox EV, the reported production timeline closely aligns with the company's previously announced roadmap for future electronics and computing technology.
Equinox EV Continues to Receive Incremental Improvements
Before an all-new generation arrives, Chevrolet is expected to continue refining the current Equinox EV through regular model-year updates instead of introducing a major redesign.
One confirmed change is planned for the 2027 Equinox EV, which will feature a factory-installed NACS charging port. The update will allow owners to connect directly to compatible Tesla Supercharger locations without requiring an external charging adapter, improving charging convenience as the North American industry increasingly adopts the NACS standard.
